Don was born on Oct. 18, 1931, in Canton, Mo., to the late Homer and Alice Caldwell Hemming. He married Lois Seals on Sept. 19, 1953, in Meyer. Lois survives of Loraine.
Don served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Loraine, past township supervisor for Keene Township and a life-long farmer. He was employed at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy in the dietary department and in his younger years he was a commercial fisherman on the Mississippi River.
Don was a member of the Meyer Gun and Boat Club and Community Unit 4 School Board. He had a private pilot's license and enjoyed taking people up in his airplane. He was also a member of the Flying Farmers Club. He enjoyed trap shooting, fishing, traveling across the United States by car and loved doing building projects.
In addition to his wife, Don is survived by four children, David Hemming and his wife, Lesa, of Springfield, Sherri Garmer and her husband, Jim, of Mendon, Beverly Gilbert and her husband, Ron, of Ursa, and Marianne Ward and her husband, Steve, of Waynesville, Mo.; and six grandchildren, Justin Hemming, Nathan Hemming, Matthew Garmer and his fiancee, Blair Bentzinger, Brad Duncan and his wife, Cassie, Sarah Garmer, and Jessica Ward.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Homer Hemming Jr.
SERVICES: 10 a.m. Thursday in the United Methodist Church of Loraine. Interment will be in Franklin Cemetery near Mendon.
VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Hunter Funeral Home in Mendon.
MEMORIALS: United Methodist Church of Loraine or the Loraine Fire Department.
