GOLDEN, Ill. -- Freddie R. "Fred" Bennett, 71, of Golden, died Saturday (April 10, 2010) in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Fred was born on Dec. 9, 1938, in Quincy. He was a son of the late Howard W. and Esther Kurfman Bennett. He married Norma Knowles on Nov. 15, 1958, in Ebeneezer Chapel in Golden. She survives of Golden. Fred attended Centennial Ebeneezer Church and was the treasurer of the Ebeneezer Burial Association. He was a teacher at Camp Point Central Unit No. 3 schools for 17 years. He was also a paramedic for 17 years. Fred was the owner/operator of Prairie Junction Gardens in Golden. Fred was a lifetime member of the NRA and a member of the American Hemrocallis Association and American Iris Association. He was a national iris judge. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Fred is survived by four children, Brenda McCullum and her husband, Michael, of Springfield, Sherri Young of Golden, Ann Marie Lewellyn and her husband, Lonny, of Macon, and Thomas Bennett and his wife, Tarra, of Golden; six grandchildren, Angela Young, Cheyenne Bennett, Logan and Delaney Lewellyn, and Katie Bennett and Joseph McCullum; two stepgrandchildren, Trenton and Aideen Orr; one brother, Lowell Bennett and his wife, Nancy, of Chillicothe; and one sister, Joyce Bennett of LaHarpe. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Meda Dixon, and two daughters in infancy. SERVICES: Cremation rites have been accorded and a private family service will be held at a later date. There will be no formal service. VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday memorial visitation will be in the Hunter Funeral Home in Golden.
