Harriett Hull, 94, of Mendon, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at Cedarhurst in Quincy, IL.
Born on November 27, 1928 in Jacksonville, IL, to Robert “Slick” Garman and Mabel (Curry) Garman. Raised with 4 brothers and 2 sisters in Springfield, IL, where she met her future husband, Murel Hull, while a waitress in a train depot. They were married in 1946, as Murel served his country at the end of WWII. Together they created a love-filled home, into which they brought three children, Bob Hull, Ed Hull, and Kathy (Randy) Wilcox. Murel preceded Harriett in death at the young age of 50 years old, having met only 4 grandsons. Harriett never remarried or even considered anyone else because, as she put it, she had married the love of her life. By the time Harriett went Home, she had 7 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 10 great, great grandchildren, all beginning with Bob’s sons: Jeff (Ane), Matt (Karen), Brian (Kate) and Gary Hull, and Ed’s sons and daughter: Jason (Sara) and Nick Hull, and Tracy (Jerry) Schoonover. Harriett was also a loving aunt to her sister Nettie Beard’s children in Pittsfield, IL, with whom she remained close.
Harriett met and began to follow Jesus as a young mother, and she absolutely overflowed with His love through her lifetime. Everyone who met her described her as “sweet” but she was so much more. Her family was blessed by her endless love and support. Her friends and church family were also the recipients of unconditional love and tireless assistance. Harriett’s most important occupation was that of wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, but outside the home, she also served as a cook at: Camp Saukenauk when Murel was Camp Ranger; Kaufman’s Kettle in Lima, IL; North Adams Home in Mendon, IL; and a donut shop in Mendon, IL. Countless family, Boy Scout-related, and church gatherings were blessed by her love-infused cooking skills. Mendon residents were blessed with her smiles and waves as she walked its streets for exercise, nearly every day for over 30 years, undaunted by weather or walking conditions. Family and friends were blessed with her loving caregiving when she quickly came to their aid, until dementia claimed those abilities, very, very late in her life.
