GOLDEN, Ill. -- Herbert E. "Herb" Schmidt, 60, of Golden, died Monday (March 22, 2010) in Blessing Hospital in Quincy. He was born Feb. 4, 1950, in Clayton, a son of the late Earl and Marian Ebbing Schmidt. He married Betty Sue Heinecke on Aug. 23, 1974, in St. Thomas Catholic Church in Camp Point. Herbert graduated from Central High School in 1968. He spent his entire life as a general contractor, building homes, garages, putting on new roofs and many other renovation projects throughout the area. He spent 24 years as a trustee for the Golden Fire Department. He was also an avid hunter. He loved to spend time in the woods, whether it was hunting deer, turkey, mushrooms or just walking; it was his favorite place to be. Herbert was a lifelong member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Camp Point. He loved playing all types of card games. He also liked to watch sports, especially the New York Yankees and Green Bay Packers. Surviving are his wife, Betty; one son, Matt Schmidt and his wife, Carrie, of Camp Point; three grandchildren whom he adored, Carter, McKenzie and Mason Schmidt; his mother-in-law, Leona Heinecke of Golden; three brothers, James (Pat) Schmidt of Belleville, Maurice (Clara) Schmidt of Clayton and Francis (Nancy) Schmidt of Clayton; three sisters, Janet (Lindell) Johnson of Clayton, Marcia (Carl) Taylor of Mount Sterling and Ruth Schmidt of Clayton; two brothers-in-law, Roger (Pat) Heinecke of Golden and John Heinecke of Golden; three sisters-in-law, Carol Altgilbers of Quincy, Dorothy (Larry) Dieterle of Golden and Mary (Mike) Herschler of Quincy; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Eberhard Heinecke; and one brother, Dale Schmidt. SERVICES: 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Thomas Catholic Church in Camp Point, with the Rev. Thomas Henseler and Deacon Mike Ellerman conducting. Burial will be in Immanuel Cemetery in Golden. VISITATION: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Hunter Funeral Home in Golden.
