John J. Daugherty

John J. Daugherty, 98, of Quincy, Illinois, formerly of Mendon, Illinois passed away at 9:20 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, Illinois. He was born in Mendon Township, on February 20, 1926, a son of John W. and Flora M. (Worman) Daugherty. John married Lila Rose Kasparie on November 4, 1949, in Quincy, Illinois. She preceded him in death on December 18, 2005.

John graduated from Mendon Township High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII in the South Pacific. He saw action at Luzon and Mindanao in the Philippines. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Presidential Liberation Citation and two Bronze Stars. After his service, he returned to the area and began farming. He also worked for Quincy Leather and Hardware and Quincy Compressor, retiring after twenty-four years of service. He was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Mendon, Illinois and a lifelong member of the Quincy VFW. 

John’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Illinois Veterans Home for their excellent care.

He is survived by his son John D. Daugherty and his wife Gayanne of Quincy, Illinois; and a sister-in-law, Carol Daugherty of Quincy, Illinois. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lila; and his brothers, Lloyd, Marvin and Leland Daugherty, and his sisters, Cleo Rampley and Ruth Elston.

Graveside services will be held with Military Honors at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 26, 2024, at Home Cemetery, near Fowler, Illinois. Jim Dennis will officiate.
